Adult Education Classes Winter 2024

Class Name: Create own felted dryer balls

About your Instructor: The instructor makes by hand functional and decorative wet-felted items out of 100% wool and silk fibers. She uses both Montana-grown wool and other domestic wool for the items she designs. She also hand-dyes wool and silk to create unique designs. She has taught wet-felting classes for the Corvallis Adult Ed program and will be teaching there again this coming winter quarter. She also sells her hand-crafted items.

Minimum students: 3

Maximum Students: 12

Class Description: Spend an evening creating your own felted dryer balls using 100% natural wool and silk fibers.  Wet felting is a process of using water and soap to shrink natural fibers together, creating fun, decorative or functional objects or clothing.  This is a one night class to make a fun design of your own creation.

$15 materials fee

One evening only :Thursday April 25th 6:00-8:00 pm at Florence-Carlton school. You must sign up ahead of time on the link above for materials.

Extra Material Fee Needed (if any): Fiber is needed to complete the project at $15 per person. I will supply all other necessary materials for creating the project.

Class Name: Florence-Carlton Book Club

About your Instructor: I am a former librarian who reads incessantly and loves to discuss what I read with others...but I will let others talk first!

Minimum students: 2

Maximum Students: 10

Class Description: Ten members will read a book during the month and return the next month to discuss it.

Class Fee: Free class

Extra Material Needed (if any): Book kits provided by Missoula Public Library make it possible to offer this class completely free of charge.

Class Meets: High School Library 7-8:30 on the second Thursday of each month Feb- June

Class Name: Genealogical Foundations
Teacher: Shelby Pallo

About your Instructor: In April, this instructor will graduate with a bachelor's in interdisciplinary studies: family history and history. She currently works for FamilySearch and has taken collegiate courses in genealogical research, methodology, writing, genetic genealogy, and Latin paleography. Additionally, she has worked on the Nauvoo Community Project at BYU and the Kentucky Colored Soldiers Project.

Minimum students: 3
Maximum Students: 20

Class Description: Learn the basics of the genealogical process and receive guidance for your research problems. The instructor will teach you some methodology and the foundations of the Genealogical Proof Standard.

Extra Material Needed (if any): None, but an Ancestry subscription or purchasing RootsMagic would be helpful!

If possible, bring a laptop.

Class Meets: Tuesdays 6:00-7:00 PM January 16th-March 5th (8 weeks) *The class on Feb 13th may be rescheduled.

Class Description: Participants will learn how to make a decorative and functional vessel out of natural wool and silk fibers using a wet felting technique. You will be able to design your own color combinations and shape of the vessel for a finished project unique to them.

Extra Material Fee Needed (if any): Fiber is needed to complete the project at $15 per person. I will supply all other necessary materials for creating the project.

Class Meets: Tuesdays 6:00-8:00 PM January 23rd and January 30th (2 hours for 2 weeks)

Seeking Instructors

Florence-Carlton School is still seeking adult education teachers who are willing to share their passion and expertise with our adult community members. We hope to provide a variety of adult/community education courses throughout each year and need your help! Please fill out this course request if you would like to teach/present a course. All courses and instructors must be approved by the District.  Most classes will begin during the week of January 15th, and end on March 15th although some classes vary. 

All classes must have at least 3 participants registered on the first day for the class to continue. Please contact Alli Bristow with any questions at bristowa@florence.k12.mt.us
